
Slovenian wilderness and a visit to Lipica Stud
Nature lovers - this one is for you! Ride on the scenic and beautiful Karst Plateau in Slovenia, discovering ancient caves and castles, hidden treasures, and spectacular wildlife including deer, boar, bears, wolves and a range of birds. If you’re lucky you may even spot a bear on an evening’s trip to a woodland hide.
On this trip you’ll also visit Lipica Stud, home of the Lipizzaner horse and biggest Lipizzaner stud farm in the world, with its origins dating back to 1580. On this visit you will learn about the history of the world famous breed and witness expert trainers working with their stallions.

THE HORSES
The horses are a mix of quarter horses and warmbloods and are in western tack. The horses are forward and fit so you’ll be able to enjoy many quick canters each day.
Borut’s wife has a love of Icelandic horses and there are two in the herd that you can ride if you would like to. Fruc has a very cheeky personality and has no problem keeping up with the larger horses. Askia is very beautiful, with a thick luscious mane and a grey/blue and white paint coat. She famously has a very smooth canter and is nicknamed the ‘Magic Carpet’!
ACCOMMODATION
This is a centre based ride with comfortable accommodation in the village of Trnje. The B&B has two twin rooms and a triple room. The rooms are clean and comfortable but not glamorous, although guests will enjoy the beautiful horse photos, art and memorabilia spread around – your hosts are true horse lovers!
Guests will have your own room entrances, so there is plenty of privacy.
Each of the rooms has a private bathroom but this is not necessarily an en-suite. The rooms will also have views across the fields to the horses or over the gardens.

The price does not include international or domestic flights, transfers, travel insurance, additional drinks with your meal, lunch on day 6, entrance fees to non-riding sites, extra activities.
TRANSFERS
Airport transfers from Ljubljana to Trnje can be arranged for €60 per vehicle each way.
If flights arrive at similar times, you can share the cost of this with other riders.
MEALS
Breakfast will be eaten at the B&B and is buffet style with an assortment of bread, home-made jams, cheese, honey, yoghurt and cereals plus tea and coffee.
Lunches and dinners will be in different locations - usually in local pubs - offering delicious local homemade food. Slovenian cuisine can be rich and hearty and is influenced by neighbouring countries Italy and Austria. Dinner’s are often meat heavy; staples include beef goulash, veal schnitzel and gnocchi.
Lunches will include delicious local wine.
Vegetarians can be catered for.
YOUR GUIDE
Each of the herd of horses is carefully trained by by Borut, the ride operator. Borut was born and raised in the mountains you’ll ride in. He’s closely in tune with his horses and their welfare is paramount.
Borut is also trained farrier and has been known to refit thrown shoes high up in the mountains! The riding terrain is a mixture of mountains and valleys. Speed lovers - you will get a few fast gallops here!

SLOVENIA
Straddling the boundary of eastern and western Europe, Slovenia benefits greatly from being in the middle of it all. The terrain is mountainous with a small line of coast retained from neighbouring Italy. You’ll fly into the capital Ljubljana, a picture perfect medieval down built on the banks of a river with a castle perched on the clifftop above the town.
Time Zone: GMT+1
Climate: Please pack for all weather including warm over trousers and a waterproof lined jacket or bring a warm fleece. Riding in the mountains you might come across a lot or rain, hail - even in the summer time! The average temperature in June / July between 12C and 26C.
YOUR ITINERARY

Fly into Ljubljana and transfer to the village of Trnje. On arrival at your accommodation in you will be shown your room and then head to a local pub for dinner.

After a buffet breakfast of bread, home-made jams, cheese, honey, yoghurt and cereals you will drive a short way to the village of Sembije to meet your horses.
You will get your horses ready and set out on the trail, following a path which goes under a natural wall and through a tunnel carved into the rock. You’ll ride until you reach Silentabor, where you’ll have spectacular views of the wildness around you. Your next stop is the village of Narin where you’ll have time to rest and enjoy lunch in a pub. There is also a pool here for a cooling dip if the weather is hot, so remember to bring swimming gear!
After lunch, you’ll continue riding on the hillsides of Primoz where you will be able to stop and look at the remains of the tunnels from World War I. The trail leads you through woods and onto floodplains of the river Pivka, before reaching Trnje again.
You will settle your horses here and have dinner together before returning to your B&B to overnight.
Riding time: 7 hours

After breakfast, you will head out on a half day ride to the lake Petelinjsko Jezero. The path takes you through unspoilt nature and a small traditional village where the people may openly offer you some of their authentic homemade sheep’s milk cheese to try.
Head back to Trnje for lunch and to change for the afternoon sightseeing activity.
Today you can choose to visit either Postonjska Jama (the cave park) or Predjamski Grad (a beautiful Medieval castle built into the mouth of a cave). NB: Entrance fees to either activity are not included.
After sightseeing, you will head out for dinner at your sigh seeing destination and then will return to Trnje to overnight.
Riding time: 4 hours

This morning you have another half day ride, this time to the lake Palsko Jezero, following a route through green forests and stopping to view sights along the way.
After returning to Trnje for lunch, you will have a chance to shower and change before heading to the Lipica Stud in the afternoon – the home of the Lipizzaner horse.
Once there, you can choose to take a ride in the horse-drawn carriage, visit the Lipizzaner Museum to learn about the history of the famous breed, take a tour of the stables or simply relax in the beautifully maintained grounds. NB: Entrance fees and costs for additional activities are payable locally.
Later you will return to Trnje for dinner and to overnight.
Riding time: 4 hours

Today will be a full day of riding as you head out through Trnje to the floodplains of the river Pvka.
After passing an old mill and the ruins of castle Kalec, there will be a chance to stop for a rest in the shade of some huge lime trees, before continuing on woodland paths to the village of Bac, where you will have a traditional ‘Nonna style’ lunch.
In the afternoon, you will ride to Sembije, following the forest route uphill to Mala Milonja which offers heavenly views of the landscape around you.
Tonight you will leave the horses here and have dinner nearby before returning to Trnje to overnight.
Riding time: 7 hours

Today will be a non-riding day as you head to Piran – an old port town that has remnants of a medieval wall, protected as a cultural historical monument.
Narrow streets and closely constructed houses descend from the hill to the church and central square in true Mediterranean character.
This town, which grew up under the influence of Venice, is considered to be one of the most authentic and photogenic towns on the Adriatic coast.
Lunch is to your own account today so you can choose from the many cafes and restaurants on offer.

Your day will begin with the short drive to Sembije to meet and saddle the horses.
You will then you ride to Milojna, which is bear territory and if you are very lucky you may see one, or evidence of one, along the trail.
This wild area offers breathtaking views from the hilltops and surrounding landscape.
A special lunch of wild boar goulash will be served at an idyllic cottage in a clearing near some WWI tunnels.
In the afternoon, you will continue your ride back to Sembije for an early dinner.
This evening you will have the chance to head out with an experienced guide to a hunting observatory where, if you sit quietly enough and long enough, you may get to view wild bears.
Riding time: 5 hours

After breakfast you are transferred to the airport for your flight home or onwards travel.
