WHAT TO PACK

There is no bad weather, just bad clothing decisions

Dressing for a riding holiday is all about layers. Pack base layers (vests, merino tops, t-shirts), mid-layers (gilets, fleeces, woolen jumpers) and outer-layers (windbreakers, rain coats).

Long sleeved merino wool will keep you warm and fresh, even after a weeks straight use. A fleece mid-layer is hardwearing and often water-resistant. You’ll need waterproof trousers and a great wind-proof jacket.

Wear natural colours. You want to blend into your environment for classic and timeless photos and memories. Greens, browns + beige are perfect. Leave the bright reds and pinks for the ski field.

If you’re packing for the mountains it’s always better to pack for coldest eventuality. Staying warm is key to enjoying yourself.

We road-test the products we share here and some links are affiliate links where we earn a small commission if you buy the product at no extra cost to you. We only share which we actually wear and what we think you will also love.

Getting beautiful shots from the back of your horse is easier than ever these days with the newer iPhones having incredible in-built stabilisation.

When on a safari size matters and you might find yourself having to sacrifice clothing space in your saddlebags so that you can bring along your gadgets.

You can get away with just your phone, or bring along a GoPro Max for incredible 360 views of your rides with surprisingly great audio. On long rides make sure you have a good power bank and remembers batteries drain faster in cold temperatures.

MEDICAL + BEAUTY BAG

You can simplify your skincare and make up routine to the very bare essentials on safari. Most of our rides do have the option of hot showers and fresh water wherever you go. In the places that don’t, like Kyrgyzstan, don’t forget your micropur water purification tablets.

Biodegradable wipes will be your best friend on days when there are no showers. Don’t forget to take them with you and dispose of them in a refuse place and not in nature.

Always bring a high SPF sunscreen and a lip balm with SPF. The lip balm will help in the wind too.

LUGGAGE

Squeezed into the hold of little planes, stacked onto the back of pick-up trucks, tucked into the last remaining space in a 1993 Ford Dodge - your luggage needs to compact and tough.

Leave your Samsonite suitcase at home, pack a duffle and a back-pack, wear your boots on the plane to save packing room and bring travel sized liquids to avoid checking bags and the risk of losing your luggage just before your week long remote safari.
